Wake Forest University's women's intercollegiate basketball team was established in 1971. In 1972 Wake Forest Women's Basketball program joined the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and was a member of the organizations North Carolina chapter. Upon dissolution of the AIAW, Wake Forest women's sports teams joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1978, and has been a member institution since then. This collection documents the historical and current activities of the Demon Deacons Women's Basketball team. Materials in this collection includes games programs, administrative files, schedules, and materials relating to former coaches and team alumni.

Biographical and Historical Note

Women's basketball began intercollegiate competition in 1971. Early head coaches were Nora Lynn Finch (1971-73), Gail Klock (1973-74), Sharron Perkins (1974-76), and Barbara Warren (1976-79).

The team began playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the 1977-78 season. It has participated in the ACC tournament each year since then, and the team's best results were semifinals appearances in 1986, 1988, and 2012. The team has made two appearances in the NCAA tournament (1988 and 2021) and eight appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) (2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2022, 2023.

Head coaches during the era of ACC play were: Wanda Briley (1979-85), Joe Sanchez (1985-92), Karen Freeman (1993-97), Charlene Curtis (1997-2004), Mike Petersen (2004-12), Jen Hoover (2012-22), and Megan Gebbia (2022-present).

This collection documents the past and current activities of the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons Women's Basketball Team. This collection primarily contains administrative files and originated with past directors of women's athletics. These records begin coverage in the early 1970's when Wake Foprest began playing intercollegiate sports.
