Athletics Department. Field Hockey Records
The Wake Forest Field Hockey intercollegiate athletics program started in 1971 and has since grown into a competitive and successful athletic program. The materials in this collection originated in the office of the Director of Women's Athletics for administrative purposes. The coverage of materials begins with the field hockey team's participation in the Deep South Field Hockey Association in 1971 and extends into the present-day. Materials in this collection include end-of-season statistics, schedules, souvenir programs from matches, as well as rosters, administrative correspondence, and promotional materials.
Biographical and Historical Note
The inaugural season of Wake Forest Field Hockey was 1971, featuring just 4 matches. From 1971 until 1992 the team played in the Deep South Association and participated in tournaments arranged by the conference and by the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NCAIAW). Barbara Bradley was hired as the first head coach of field hockey in 1983 and led the program for 9 years.
Field hockey was first played in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1983. Wake Forest joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for competition in 1992, the same year that Jennifer Averill was hired as the field hockey head coach.
The Wake Forest field hockey team was the regular season ACC champion in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006 and won the ACC tournament in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2014. The team won the NCAA national championship in 2002, 2003, and 2004, and was defeated in the NCAA national championship game in 2005 and 2006.
As of 2024, Averill remains the head coach. She has been inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2010) and been named National Coach of the Year (2002, 2003, 2004) and ACC Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2022).
