Biographical and Historical Note
Wake Forest College was founded in 1834 in Wake Forest, North Carolina, north of Raleigh. It was one of the first institutions of higher learning in North Carolina. It began as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute but by 1838 it was Wake Forest College. Buildings on that campus, some later moved, demolished, or destroyed, include the Calvin Jones House, Wait Hall, Heck-Williams library, Lea Laboratory, Johnson Science Building, and Wingate Memorial. In 1956, the college was relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The institution was renamed to be Wake Forest University in 1967.
Collection Overview
These records contain historical documents related to the original campus of Wake Forest College. The materials are mostly comprised of images and illustrations, and include pictures of original buildings, postcards, newspaper clippings, and a photogravure book of black and white images. The collection also includes the contents of two cornerstones from the original gymnasium and Alumni Building, dating from the early 1900s.
