Biographical and Historical Note
The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation was founded by Mary Reynolds Babcock following the death of her brother in 1936 to provide charitable acts to North Carolinians. The Reynolds family established the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation to benefit citizens in poverty in 1953 after the passing of Mary Reynolds Babcock. Mary Reynolds Babcock and her husband, Charles, donated 350 acres from the family estate to Wake Forest University which moved the university to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1956.
