The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation was formed by Mary Reynolds Babcock and her siblings in Winston-Salem in order to serve as a memorial to their youngest brother, Zachary Smith Reynolds. Materials in this collection include correspondence, event materials, reports, booklets, and memorandums. A small amount of materials are related to the College's move to Winston-Salem.

Biographical and Historical Note

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation was founded in 1936 by Mary Reynolds Babcock and her siblings in Winston-Salem in order to serve as a memorial to their youngest brother, Zachary Smith Reynolds. "Smith" Reynolds died at the age of 20 in 1932 at the family's Winston Salem estate, Reynolda House.

In 1946, ZSR entered into a contract with Wake Forest College to move the school to Winston-Salem from Wake Forest, N.C. The foundation provides annual contributions to the university in perpetuity. According to its mission, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is "dedicated to improving the quality of life for all North Carolinians."
