Biographical and Historical Note

The Wake Forest Scholars Program wors to identify and support high achieving undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds and academic interests. The program offers merit-based scholarships and research opportunties for students.

The Scholars Program also supports students in the First in the Forest, Signature Scholars Program, and Magnolia Scholars. The Signature Scholars identifies exemplary high school seniors and provides them with support and resources to ensure their success at Wake Forest. The First in the Forest Program is a resource for all undergraduate students who are first in their families to attend an American college or university. Members of the Magnolia Scholars are first-generation domestic students who are accepted based on essays, recommendations, and interviews. The program benefits from philanthropy that offers several opportunities for students, such as scholarships, summer study grants, study abroad grants, and research opportunities.

The Scholars Program was previously led by Dr. Tom Phillips, class of 1974. Phillips began working with merit-based scholarships in 1982 and when the Scholars Program began around 2003, directed that until his retirement in 2020. In addition to his primary work, Phillips helped establish the WFU Writers Hall of Fame and led the planning of the "Words Awake" campus literary festival after its first few celebrations. Jackie Sheridan has led the program since 2020.
