Wake Forest University moved from Wake Forest to Winston-Salem N.C. in 1956. Wake Forest University's presence has affected the Winston-Salem community in many ways through urban development, economic development, and an increase in population. Three other colleges and universities are also located in Winston-Salem: Salem College, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Winston-Salem State University.
