      <head>Historical Note</head>
      <p>Collegiate honor societies recognize acedemic achievement, leadership, and general good citizenship. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society for the liberal arts. The first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. Wake Forest University's Phi Beta Kappa chapter was established in 1940 with the induction of 10 student members from the class of 1941. Today, about 8% of the graduating class is inducted into the society. Other societies at Wake Forest mentioned in this collection are Delta Sigma Rho and Tau Kappa Alpha, which honor excellence in foresics and original speaking; Mortar Board, which recognizes excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service; and Omicron Delta Epsilon, which honors achievement in economics.</p>

      <p>This collection includes information about various college honor societies nationwide, and Wake Forest University chapters. Materials include constitutions, meeting minutes, and member lists. There are two notebooks containing member lists, meeting minutes, member nominations, and ceremony information for Phi Beta Kappa from 1940-1988.</p>
