- Oscar Fitz Allen Baxter was born July 5, 1819, in Currituck County, N.C. He received his bachelor's (1840) and master's degrees (1842) from Wake Forest College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Baxter went on to become a passed assistant surgeon in the U.S. Navy. Materials in this collection include a listing from the detailing Baxter's educational and professional background along with an autobiographical letter addressed to the Medical Naval Board in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
