Biographical and Historical Note
Laurel Springs Baptist Church was constituted on July 24, 1891. The presbytery was composed of the Reverends J.D. Harris and Frank B. Cheek. The seven charter members were: Reverend J.D. Harris was elected, pastor; J. Horton Doughton, church clerk; and John R. Long as deacon. The church met and held its first services in a schoolhouse from 1891-1897. The first church building, 1898-1930, was a frame structure, 42' by 28', with a seating capacity of 300 which was destoryed by fire in 1930. The present brick church building was constructed in 1932 with an addition built in 1942. Membership in 1891, 6; in 1897, 14; in 1907, 59; in 1917, 53; in 1927, 70; in 1938, 67; in 1963, 73; in 1973, 80.
