Ammons was born on a tobacco farm outside of Whiteville, North Carolina and began writing poetry while serving in World War II. He graduated from Wake Forest University after the war and eventually started a career as a professor at Cornell University. His poetry has won two National Book Awards, a National Book Critics Circle Award, the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry, the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, the MacArthur Fellowship, and the Wallace Stevens Award.
