Benson Field Cole was a Wake Forest College alumnis (1856), who died in late 1856. This collection contains two items from Cole's time as a Wake Forest student: a photocopied diary and a notebook containing course notes for philosophy and chemistry courses taught by William Gaston Simmons. It also contains clippings about Cole from the Biblical Recorder.

Biographical and Historical Note

Benson Field Cole was a native of Chatham County, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1856. He was a tutor at Wake Forest College until his death. The Biblical Recorder notes on November 20, 1856, that his death of typhoid fever occured "Saturday last," or November 15. A Philomathesia memorial notes the death date as December 15, 1856.

Collection Overview

This collection contains two items from Cole's time as a student at Wake Forest College. The first is a notebook, dated September 26, 1854, contains class notes for Philosophy and Chemistry taken under Prof. William Gaston Simmons. The second is the photocopy of a diary that Cole kept from September 18, 1852 to August 31, 1856. He records his religious feelings; his preaching in nearby churches; his call to the ministry; talks on missions and sermons heard; conversations with students and others; his readings; his appointment as tutor at Wake Forest College; and his ordination on August 31, 1856. Clippings from the  Biblical Recorder about Cole after his death are also included.
