Dr. Mary Lynch Johnson was an alumnus of Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina, and a long-time professor of English at the college. The papers contain her correspondence; articles and tributes about her; and her writings.

Biographical and Historical Note

Dr. Mary Lynch Johnson was born May 13, 1897, in Scotland County. She was an alumnus of Meredith College (B.A., 1917) in Raleigh, N.C. Johnson continued her education by getting a master's degree at Columbia and her doctorate at Cornell University. In 1918, she returned to Meredith College to be a professor of English. In 1952, she became head of the English Department.

Her published writings include Elizabeth Avery Colton: An Educational Pioneer; articles on poets and authors in  The Groteqsue in Browning; and  The History of Meredith College.

She died on July 17, 1984. That same year, in 1984, Meredith College established its first endowed chair in her name, the Mary Lynch Johnson Chair of English.
