The papers contain her correspondence; articles and tributes about her; and her writings.</abstract> <origination label="Creator"> <persname source="naf"> <part>Johnson, Mary Lynch</part> </persname> </origination> </did> <bioghist id="aspace_f5190741241268980e6a81753e43b6a9"> <head>Biographical Note</head> <p>Dr. Mary Lynch Johnson was born May 13, 1897, in Scotland County. She was an alumnus of Meredith College (B.A., 1917) in Raleigh, N.C. Johnson continued her education by getting a master's degree at Columbia and her doctorate at Cornell University. In 1918, she returned to Meredith College to be a professor of English. In 1952, she became head of the English Department.</p> <p>Her published writings include <title render="italic"><part>Elizabeth Avery Colton: An Educational Pioneer</part></title>; articles on poets and authors in <title render="italic"><part>The Groteqsue in Browning</part></title>; and <title render="italic"><part>The History of Meredith College</part></title>.</p> <p>She died on July 17, 1984.
