Inventory of the William Furnifold Marshall Papers, 1879-1926

William Furnifold Marshall attended Wake Forest College, 1879-83, where he was a debator and tutor. Awarded his diploma in 1890, he was a school teacher in Fair Bluff, North Carolina, 1884-86; Principal of Globe Academy, 1886-89; and a teacher in Lenoir North Carolina, before becoming editor of the Gastonia (North Carolina) Gazette, 1890-?, and the  North Carolina Educator, 1911-.

His papers consist of his Wake Forest College receipts, accounts, compositions, poems, Latin exercises, a survey, speech notebook, diary/notebook, and a logic and rhetoric examination taken by Eva Belle Simmons. His professional papers include papers from the high school at Fair Bluff, North Carolina; correspondence; Gastonia Gazette newspaper clippings; correspondence with F.P. Hall, and other clippings relating to the Democratic Campaign Club, Gastonia, North Carolina;  North Carolina Education and  North Carolina Poems, 1886-1912; and photographs. Also included are letters from Dr. Willian Louis Poteat to W.F. Marshall concerning a gift in memory of his son William (class of 1910), who died of typhoid fever in 1912.
