He is probably best known for his 1924 play, "What Price Glory," co-written with Maxwell Anderson, and his autobiographical novel, Plumes, which narrated his military service during World War I.

Stallings was born in Macon, Georgia in 1894. In 1912, he entered Wake Forest College, where he served as editor of The Old Gold and Black. Here, he met his first wife, Helen Purefoy Poteat, who was the daughter of Wake Forest president, Dr. William Louis Poteat. Laurence and Helen corresponded frequently for many years and married in 1919; their marriage produced two daughters, Sylvia and Diana. The couple divorced in 1936.

Stallings graduated from Wake Forest in 1916 and joined the United States Marine Reserve in 1917. Placed on active duty, he was sent to France where he was wounded in the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918. The injury sustained here ultimately led to the amputation of his leg (and, many years later, the other leg would be amputated as well), but the experience gained in the trenches inspired some of Stallings' most memorable literary works.

He spent much of his career producing numerous scripts for stage and screen, including a collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein entitled "Rainbow," and an adaptation of Hemingway's
A Farewell to Arms
. His novel,
Plumes
, was adapted into King Vidor's highly successful 1925 silent film,
The Big Parade
. At various points in his career, Stallings also worked as a reporter, columnist, entertainment critic, foreign correspondent in Ethiopia, and editor for Fox Movietone News. While working at Fox, he met Louise Vance, Movietone's "Voice of Fashion," who would become his second wife. They were married in 1937 and had two children, Laurence Jr. and Sally. Stallings was called back to USMC service during WWII but did not go overseas.

Drawing once more on his WWI service, Stallings published his final book,
The Doughboys: The Story of the AEF 1917-1918
, in 1963. He died of a heart attack in 1968 and was buried with full military honors at Fort Rosencrans National Cemetery in California.
</bioghist> <processinfo id="ref680">
Processing Information

Collection arranged and described by Huston Paschal, 2008, and Sarah Appleby, 2013.
</processinfo> <arrangement id="ref679">
Arrangement notes

Organized into two series based on separate donation of materials. Much of this series is correspondence, but also includes some emphasis on reviews and receptions of Stallings' work during this time, as well as some miscellaneous personal and professional papers. This material was donated by Stallings's and Helen Poteat's daughters Sylvia and Diana.

Series II picks up in the late 1930s, when Stallings was living and working in California and beginning a relationship with Louise Vance. The material continues through his death in 1968, and also includes some supplemental material included by his daughter, Sally, which outlines the activities of his children and grandchildren up to 2011. The majority of this series consists of typescripts of various projects, most notably the numerous drafts of The Doughboys.
</scopecontent> <prefercite id="ref682">
Preferred Citation

Laurence Stallings Papers, MS 582, Z.
