Biographical and Historical Note

In 2012, the Wake Forest University School of Divinity created the Food, Faith, and Religious Leadership Initiative after noticingng the rise of food-related challenges. Fred Bahnson, co-founder of Anathoth Community Garden in Cedar Grove, NC is the founding director of this initiative. One of the primary goals of the initiative is to equip religious leaders with the knowledge necessary to lead their religious communities around food issues. It will train religious leaders to address the causes of these food-related challenges.

Efforts of the initiative have included a Food and Faith concentration for graduate students, a pilot fellowship program for religious leaders working in these areas, summer courses, and continuing education events. In 2016, the initiative expanded to become the Food, Health, and Ecological Well Being program.
