Biographical and Historical Note
Sigma Phi Epsilon (Sig Ep) is a national fraternity organization founded at the University of Richmond in 1901 with three main principles, "Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love." The Wake Forest chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon opened in April 1940, after the local fraternity Chi Tau converted to the national organization and became the N.C. Zeta chapter.
In 2002, the chapter gained national notoriety after a pig was found drunk, dehydrated, and sunburned after a fraternity event at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C. As a result, the national organization suspended the group's charter in 2002. Though Sig Ep attempted to form a strong colony when it returned to campus in 2009, efforts were unsuccessful and in 2017 the Sigma Phi Epsilon colony was closed by the national fraternity.
