Susan Smith, Head of Information Technology at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, has been selected to receive the 2008 Innovation Award from the Instruction Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries. Susan will receive a prize of $3000 and a plaque at the annual meeting of the American Library Association in Anaheim this June. Susan was nominated for her role in the Sociology course, “Social Stratification in the American South” held for two weeks last summer on a road trip through the Deep South. Susan worked closely with Professors Earl Smith and Angela Hattery to design the technology portion of this biennial course. Susan introduced the use of wikis, blogs and image sharing for the course website and gave course-related library instruction to fourteen students on the bus, in hotel lobbies, and even in the Laundromat!

ZSR is a campus leader in the use of Web 2.0 technologies to engage students. Wikis and blogs are two valuable tools for incorporating collaboration into coursework, as evidenced by the central role they played in the South Course. If you would like a wiki or blog for your course, contact Susan Smith or Lauren Pressley, Instructional Design Librarian.
