Student Assistants
Students interested in working in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library must contact Kristen Morgan in the Administrative Office to be referred to the departments that have openings. A description of the student assistant duties for each department is listed below.

Circulation
2nd Floor – Reynolds Wing, Circulation Desk
Student assistants working in the Circulation Department are expected to greet library patrons in person and on the telephone; prepare materials to be placed on Reserve; respond to requests, answer questions and make referrals; check out materials; search for missing items; take inventory and do shelf reading; keep circulation statistics; check in, arrange and reshelve returned items; straighten and clear study areas of used materials; maintain security on levels 3 and 4; close the library at the end of late night study hours; service copiers.

4th Floor - Reynolds Wing, Room 428
Student assistants in the Government Documents / Microtext Department are responsible for staffing the Documents & Microtext reference desk. Students are expected to assist patrons in locating documents, using scanners and printers, searching for and locating government information on the Internet, explainging the use of finding aids, indexes and search tools, and giving general library directions. Assistants are also responsible for checking in shipments, compiling statistics, typing labels, shelving items and maintaining shelf order. Students who work until library closing are responsible for closing floors 4-8 of the Reynolds Wing. Good customer service orientation, attention to detail and reliability are important characteristics in this position.

2nd Floor - Wilson Wing, Room 259
ITC Lab Assistant: Responsible for the basic maintenance and operations of the ITC Desktop and Multimedia Labs. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting patrons with logging into machines, basic operations including printing and/or saving files, and basic troubleshooting of common problems. In addition, lab assistants aid with lab maintenance, including replacing toner cartridges and replenishing paper in the lab printers, managing the Pharos print release stations, and updating applications and virus protection files. Lab assistants circulate ITC multimedia equipment to patrons via the Voyager circulation module. Lab assistants also help in class preparation with duties that include copying handouts for various instructional purposes.
Lab Assistants are trained to provide support to patrons with the following technologies: DVD, Laser Disc, and VHS players, digital audio and video production, multimedia related hardware, which includes film and flatbed scanners, CD burners, DVD burners, and headphone amplifiers, as well as all multimedia related software.

3rd Floor - Reynolds Wing, Room 304
Student assistants in Interlibrary Loan are responsible for helping staff process loan requests with minimal supervision. Must be able to multi-task and follow instructions. Attention to detail, accuracy, legible handwriting, dependability and punctuality are very important. Duties include but not limited to: looking up call numbers, pulling items from stacks, photocopying and scanning or faxing/mailing articles to appropriate library, opening incoming mail and separating borrows from loans, updating in ILLiad, shelving incoming items for patrons to pick up at the Circulation desk, picking up returned items at the Circulation desk, update and package to mail, picking up incoming mail and taking outgoing mail to mailroom, answering phone and taking complete messages when unable to answer questions, routine clean up in work area (i.e. packaging recycling and taking to recycle room, trading out trash cans outside workroom door), notifying supervisor when supplies are running low.

6th Floor - Reynolds Wing, Room 601
Students assist in the processing and servicing of rare historical materials and other activities supporting the public, technical, and administrative functions of the department. Tasks include preparing and verifying inventories against physical contents of collections; preparing collections for processing by re-foldering, re-boxing, removing paper clips, staples, and rubber bands. Labeling materials, arranging materials in chronological order; retrieving and shelving collection material; photocopying, filing, and data entry; moving collections, books, supplies, and furniture; answering the telephone, directing calls or visitors and other reference duties as assigned.
Working with rare materials requires special care in handling with essential attention to detail and security.

3rd Floor - Reynolds Wing, Room 329
Student assistants in Preservation will be trained to perform simple book repair. This work has a learning curve and takes time to learn. Students interested in working in Preservation should be willing to learn this skill and put in the time needed. Students are also taught to: construct archival boxes and assist in laminating. Students need excellent hand skills or a background in art or craft skills.

6th Floor - Reynolds Wing, Room 629
Students assist in the daily operations of the department including the following: answer the phone, assist patrons requesting books in the Rare Books Reading Room, monitor Reading Room, check book titles in the online catalog, check book dealers' catalogs, assist in sorting manuscripts, enter data into Word and Excel documents for manuscript and gift collections, and encapsulate fragile documents.

Student assistants in Reference are responsible for shelving and maintaining shelf order of reference books; answering questions and assisting patrons in the Reference Department; assisting in filing loose-leaf materials; looking up book order titles in the online catalog; and maintaining photocopiers and printers.

2nd Floor - Wilson Wing, Room 270
Resource Services is comprised of Acquisitions, Serials, Cataloging, Binding and Marking, Database/Resource Maintenance and Collection Development. No one student will complete all the duties listed below, the tasks will be divided among approximately 15-20 students.
Acquisition student responsibilities include sorting vendor slips and sending slips and catalogs to Library liaisons, searching book titles in the online card catalog, vendor databases and other resources to determine availability, price and address; computerized searching in a national data base for libraries; preparing printed orders; creating orders in the library database; filing order sheets in the appropriate files, unpacking boxes of new library materials and preparing invoices for payment.
Serials student responsibilities include sorting serials (magazines, newspapers, etc.); opening, checking and delivering packages; preparing books and materials for online receipt; clearing and collecting invoices; converting foreign currency; posting invoices into a microcomputer and preparing gift forms.
Cataloging student responsibilities include writing call numbers in books; general typing for bookplates and adding volume information to online records.
Bindery student responsibilities include unpacking and moving materials; preparing items for bindery; verifying receipt of correct item from binder and adding newly bound volumes to the database.
Marking student responsibilities include adding ownership stamps, date due slips and affixing call number labels on new materials; making binders for pamphlets; general typing for bookplates, labels, etc.
Database/Resource Maintenance student responsibilities include examining records in the online catalog and making trips to stacks to verify that item actually exist. Students will edit holdings for online records.
Collection Development student assistants are responsible for unpacking and listing gift books, searching for orders in the online catalog, and other online sources. They may work on spreadsheet data, website, and database projects and help with preparation of collection development policies. Ten hours per week is the standard.
Occasionally students will assist with mail delivery in the library.
Attention to detail, accuracy, legible handwriting and reliability are important characteristics for students applying for these positions. The hours must be scheduled between 9am and 5pm Monday - Friday for all of these positions. No evening or weekend hours.

Web and Digital Projects Assistant (WDPA): Responsibilities include digitization of archival materials and basic maintenance and creation of library web pages. WDPAs should have familiarity with the operation of flatbed digital scanners; the technical concepts involved with the digitization of images, video, and audio; and the practices and technical requirements of web design and development, specifically HTML.
WDPAs work in a project-based environment, using established guidelines for the capture and storage of digital images and for the creation of valid code. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Dreamweaver is preferred.
WDPAs should exhibit the ability to work independently in a productive manner with minimal supervision. Attention to detail is required. Hours are flexible, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
