The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.

Due to copyright law, the following restrictions apply:

  1. Items that are used on Reserves more than one consecutive semester will need to obtain copyright permission. The Z. Smith Reynolds Library will manage copyright compliance for any items that are carried over from one semester to another.
  2. Textbooks and/or selections from textbooks will not be accepted as personal copies or for electronic reserve.
  3. No more than 10% of any book, or one article from any journal issue, may be placed on electronic reserve.
  4. Items not owned by the library or the faculty member cannot be placed on electronic reserve.
  5. The library will be willing to cover reasonable costs of obtaining copyright permission, but if costs are excessive, we will notify you as early as possible to determine if your department would like to fund the copyright payment rather than having to take the item off of reserve.
