Searching the Catalog by Author

Transcript

Hello, you're watching "how to find a book when you know the author," my name is Lauren Pressley and I'll show you how to do it. Right now we're at the Z. Smith Reynolds library page, you can see up here it's zsr.wfu.edu. Across the top of the page you'll see several tabs that help you find materials in the library. We're interested in finding a book so we'll use the catalog. The catalog takes you straight to a basic search page which is fantastic if you know a specific title or author, and in this case we do because we want to find something by Tony Morrison. I typed in Morrison, Tony because you need to search by last name first, I did not bother with capitalization, although that wouldn't hurt your search, and I didn't use a comma, although that wouldn't hurt your search either. The only thing that is important to note is that there might be a lot of people whose first names start with ‘T' and have the last name ‘Morrison' so if you search for ‘morrison t' you might get a lot of results, so if you know a little bit more it's good to include that. So I've typed in ‘morrison tony', selected author, and I'm searching. This takes us to a list that could be matches to the ‘morrison tony' search that we did. The first one is the one that is correct, you can see that there are 49 titles by Tony Morrison, so we'll select that and we have a list of works by Tony Morrison. You'll notice that these are in alphabetical order which may not be the most useful order for whatever research you are doing so you can sort in different ways. I want to find the most recent work so I'll ‘Publish Date Descending'. And now you can see the most recent ones are at the top. But, I also want to be able to check out a book so I need to look for one that is located in the ZSR main stacks, which is the main library that you can be checking books out from. So, this is the first one in the ZSR main stacks, this one is also in the ZSR main stacks. You can see that this one is more current, you can see the call number to find the work in the stacks, and if you want more information you can click on the title and see cover and get more information to see if it's worth checking out. So, that's how you find a work when you have a specific author. If you have any questions please ask a librarian. You can contact us at zsr.wfu.edu/ask.
