Searching America History and Life

Transcript

Hi. This is Bobbie. I will be showing you how to search the America History and Life database. America: History and Life covers United States and Canadian history and provides records consisting of citations and abstracts for journal articles, dissertations and book reviews published since 1964.To search for information on students protesting the Vietnam War, we can begin this search by typing in these keywords. student* and Vietnam War and protest* in the search boxes. Note the * at the end of our search terms allows us to search for spelling variants of words. There are several ways to limit a search. One way is to limit by historical period, for example let's search for the years 1964 to 1974 (era). We can also limit our search to Academic journal, language - English and Document type Article. We can now click on search. Our search yielded _______ results that are sorted by relevance. Note you can change this to sort by date of the article. As you can see, a direct link to the PDF full text is sometimes provided. (Select record #10 in the list of results)To view an abstract or summary of an article, click on the article title. The author's name is given and the title of the journal and the historical period for the article. Notice the subject headings that are assigned to the article. These terms may help us to identify other articles. In this example, we can click on WFU Fulltext options to see if the ZSR Library provides access to the article either in print or electronically via another database. This is an example of a direct link to the electronic version of the article in JSTOR. If we click on the link, we are taken directly to full text of the article. For additional assistance on how to use WFU full text options, you can view the screencast on "What to Do When Full Text Doesn't Work" which is available on the toolkit page. You can also contact a librarian at zsr.wfu.edu/ask.
