Introduction to the ZSR Catalog
Transcript
Hello, you're watching an introduction to the Z. Smith Reynolds catalog, my name is Lauren Pressley and I'll show you how to use it. Right now we are at the library's homepage, the URL for that is zsr.wfu.edu. Across the top of the page you'll see several tabs and since we're talking about the catalog, we'll click on "catalog." The catalog lets you search for materials within the building, as well as a few electronic resources. You can use these tabs to say exactly what you're looking for...if you're doing a basic search, a guided keyword search, if you're looking for the course reserve that your faculty has said would be in the catalog, or if you want to find the new items or new videos within the library. When you're doing a research paper most of the time you're going to want to use the basic search or guided keyword search. The basic search, right here, is best if you know something basic about the work. Maybe the title is mentioned in your syllabus, or maybe you've heard your professor mention a specific author, or maybe you wrote down a call number but can't remember the title or the author. So, the basic search really only works for you when you know something basic about the work. Guided keyword works a lot more like Google, you just have to have an idea of the subject of your paper and then you can type in the keywords associated with that subject and you'll get all the books that have something about that keyword mentioned in the record about the book. So, let's say we're doing a paper on women's body image in college. So, I'll type in "body image," and I'll type in "college," and I'll type in "women" and click search. So now you can see that we have 13 entries, or 13 works within the building, that have something to do with all 3 of those keywords. It really works better in guided keyword because if you were to use the basic search it would look for books that just started with the keyword. This gets it, even if it's just mentioned in the table of contents. So, that's a very basic introduction to the Z. Smith Reynolds library catalog. If you have any questions, please ask a librarian.
