September is National Recovery Month, which began in 1989 as a “time to celebrate & promote the concept of recovery from substance use disorders and mental health challenges.” This month aims to celebrate the successes of those in recovery, raise awareness about the importance of treatment and recovery support services, and reduce the stigma associated with these conditions.
This year, the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) is promoting the “End the Stigma” pledge, where they will be asking the Wake Forest community to commit to dismantling stigma around addiction and recovery and support those in need in the community. Completing the “End the Stigma” pledge only takes a couple of minutes and those who complete it will be emailed their certificate!
Stigma continues to be a significant barrier for students seeking support around their substance use. The CRC exists to provide that support in an anonymous and supportive manner that meets them where they are. Pledging to help end stigma around addiction and recovery would undoubtedly bring greater awareness and make students more comfortable seeking support.
In recognition of National Recovery Month, ZSR Library provides access to a number of titles and resources highlighting the experiences and voices of individuals in recovery.
These include:
- Never Enough: The Neuroscience and Experience of Addiction by Judith Grisel
- Undoing Drugs: The Untold Story of Harm Reduction and the Future of Addiction by Maia Szalavitz
- Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction by Maia Szalavitz
- The Urge: Our History of Addiction by Carl Erik Fisher
- In Pain: A Bioethicist’s Personal Struggle with Opioids by Travis Rieder
