New Deac Week at ZSR

Before classes even began, ZSR was busy welcoming Wake Forest’s newest students. Throughout New Deac Week, library employees connected with over 700 of new undergraduate and graduate students through tours, campus fairs, and orientation events.

Fun, Fast Move-In Day Library Tours

On Tuesday, August 18th, ZSR welcomed over 80 new undergraduate students and their families for our annual Fun, Fast Move-in Day Library Tours. Designed to last just 15–20 minutes, the tours introduced students to helpful resources like study spaces, the Writing Center, and the Bridge, while also highlighting some of the features and traditions that make ZSR special, from Smith’s Café and our board game collection to Humans vs. Zombies and Wake the Library. At the end of each tour, we visited to Special Collections & Archives to share more about the rare books, manuscripts, and university history materials they can use in their own research.

Campus Services Day

On Wednesday, August 19th from 9am to 2pm, ZSR participated in the Annual Campus Services Day Fair, which introduces new Wake Forest undergraduates to campus resources. The ZSR table was staffed by employees across the library and welcomed 396 incoming first year students. We shared information about our resources, upcoming events, and student employment opportunities, with free access to the New York Times All Access and Wall Street Journal subscriptions generating the most excitement among students.

Graduate Student Orientation and Kick-Off Party

Also on Wednesday, August 19th, Danielle and Denice visited WFU’s Graduate Student Orientation held at the Barn in Reynolda Village to share more about library resources available to over 130+ new graduate students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Later that week, on Friday, August 21st, Danielle and Hannah visited the Graduate Student Kick-Off Party, which is similar in concept to the Campus Services Day Fair. They handed out swag and chatted about ZSR library with close to 100 new graduate students in just two hours.

Wrapping Up

While New Deac Week can feel a bit like a whirlwind, we are grateful for the opportunity to welcome our newest students. A special thank-you to the more than 20 ZSR employees who volunteered to lead tours and staff our tables throughout the week. Your warmth and willingness to help are a big part of what makes ZSR such a welcoming and special place for our students!
