This season’s buzzword is “backfiles.” ZSR has bought two journal backfile products and one major historical index.

  • Economist Historical Archive 1843-2003The Economist Historical Archive offers full-color page images of the The Economist back to its first issue. The full text, including advertising text, is also searchable. A new year of coverage will be added each year. For newer articles, the Professional Center Library subscribes to the electronic version on the The Economist’s website. Both editions are linked from our Find a Journal page. The latest issues are also available in print in the Allen Mandelbaum Reading Room.
  • Readers Guide Retrospective 1890-1982Remember the Readers Guide? For years, members of our Reference staff have referred students to the venerable green volumes for such topics as economic articles written during the Depression, or American perspectives about Che Guevara published during his lifetime. ZSR has recently purchased the online backfile of this key historical index. Readers Guide Retrospective indexes over 375 popular American magazines. WFU Full Text Options links users to full text in our print collection. Consider this source when assigning student research in the popular culture of the 20th century.
  • Science Direct Materials Science BackfileIncludes 110 journals back to their first issues. Backfiles are incorporated into our existing Science Direct subscription. Specific titles, such as Solid State Ionics and Acta Metallurgica, are listed on the Find a Journal page.
