“Everlasting Moments” (DVD 8366), from The Criterion Collection, is my recommendation for August. It was directed by Jan Troell, born 1931, in Sweden. The film takes place in 1907, Sweden among the working classes. The story follows a woman, Maria Larsson, who discovers herself through photography while wrestling with an abusive husband and raising four children. Beautifully filmed, you will escape into their world.
Most of his works are not available on DVD. ZSR has “The Flight of the Eagle,” one of his most acclaimed films, on Laser Disc and VHS. It is based on the great arctic adventurer S.A. Andree, in his quest to sail to the North Pole in a balloon. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1982.
“Everlasting Moments” is a masterpiece.
