This spring I received several requests asking for library staff to provide tours for elementary and middle school students during the week of April 11 – 15. One of the teachers who requested a tour congratulated us on the ACRL Award and noted that they were looking forward to touring our “wonderful library.” It is interesting to note that the week selected by all of our visitors to tour ZSR just happened to be National Library Week (April 10-16).
On Tuesday, April 12, students from Paisley IB Magnet School (Project Launch) arrived on campus. This year Bobbie, Susan, Kaeley and Giz volunteered to assist with this tour. During the tour, students had the opportunity to visit the Bridge, Reference, Government Documents, and Special Collections. On April 13, Bobbie, Mary, Giz, and Sarah served as tour leaders for 80 students from Millennium Charter Academy in Mt. Airy. Fifth grade students from Wilkes County came on Thursday, April 14. Tour leaders for this group included: Bobbie, Mary, Giz, and Kaeley.
During the library tour, students had an opportunity to visit Special Collections. Katherine and Beth had pulled a wide variety of materials and displayed them on the table in Special Collections for students to examine. Katherine, Beth, and Megan provided an excellent overview of the different types of materials in Special Collections and showed our visitors a copy of the first edition of Dracula, old newspapers that covered events of the Civil War, and copies of Harper’s Weekly. Many thanks to all of the staff who assisted with the tours. I know that the students were very excited to be here and enjoyed their library adventure!

It’s always fun to interact with younger students who may one day be WFU undergraduates! Ask Giz about his recruitment efforts in making these visitors aware that Wake Forest is a real option for them. Thanks goes to Bobbie for organizing all of the tours. She makes it look effortless, but we know that a great deal of planning goes into making it work so flawlessly.
It was fun to see so many young students in the library. You can also pass on my congratulations to the teachers as they were all very well behaved. Good work to Bobbie and all the tour guides!
Great post Bobbie! Sandy Cave’s class at the Millennium Charter School in Mt. Airy wrote the most wonderful thank you notes to all of us who participated in giving the tours of ZSR! Maybe in eight years we will see these students at WFU!
My favorite quote from the thank you notes: “The tour was so much fun I would love to come there when I’m all grownup.” (That’s what I like to hear!)
