On Wednesday, March 26th, Elizabeth Ellis and I took LIB110A and B on a field trip to WFDD, the local public radio station that just so happens to be on campus! This is one of two field trips on the syllabus of our class, “Research after Wake,” a class that prepares graduating seniors for the research needs they will encounter once they graduate.
The team at WFDD goes above and beyond to make time to show their students how a radio station works and explain the importance of local radio to communities. Shoutout to Editorial Director Bethany Chaffin, New Director Eddie Garcia, and Content Director Gabriel Maisonnave, who generously gave their time to our classes! If you want to join us in giving back to them, consider participating in their Spring Fund Drive.
Our students asked questions about how stories are selected, how the station is funded, and how they address issues of bias in news reporting, among other topics. Everyone was impressed with the large area WFDD covers (32 counties) with such a small (and dedicated) staff of reporters.

This is amazing!! Thanks for sharing, and for introducing these students to the inner workings of public radio. So very cool. I love and support WFDD!
What a creative and insightful classroom activity. Fantastic!
This is wonderful, Hu and Elizabeth. Thank you for promoting the library.
What a great way to provoke thinking about various sources of information that graduating students may consume going forward!
