Accessibility Statement
Digital Collections
Z. Smith Reynolds Library Special Collections and Archives is dedicated to providing accessible online resources and digital content.. We strive to ensure that our digital collections are usable and accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. This following statement outlines our ongoing efforts to enrich the accessibility of our digital collections and provides information on how to report accessibility issues.
Accessibility Features
Z. Smith Reynolds Library’s digital collections offer the following accessibility features to enhance the user experience:
- Alt Text
- We provide alternative text (alt text) descriptions for images and visual content wherever possible, making it easier for screen reader users to understand the content.
- Keyboard Navigation
- Our digital collections pages are designed to be navigable using a keyboard, allowing users who cannot use a mouse to browse and interact with the content.
- Transcripts
- Much of our audio and video content includes transcripts to provide access to audio content for difficult-to-hear recordings and individuals with hearing impairments.
- Browser Compatibility
- Our digital collections are designed to be accessible across a wide range of web browsers, including Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge. We recommend using the latest version of one of these browsers for the best experience. Please note that there may be occasional variations in the user interface or functionality between browsers.
- Mobile Devices
- Visitors are able to access the website on a tablet or mobile device (smartphone) in either portrait or landscape orientation.
- Accessible File Formats
- Digital materials within our collections are created based on the Library of Congress’s Recommended File Formats Statement. This helps to ensure that our content is accessible to as many individuals as possible over the longest period of time. Our digital materials are available in the following file formats: PDF/A text, MP3 audio, MP4 video, and JPEG images.
- Semantic Structure
- We use semantic HTML to ensure that the content’s structure is meaningful and well-organized, aiding both screen reader users and those who rely on keyboard navigation.
