Working on exhibits for Dr. Lynn Neal’s course on ‘Religious Intolerance.’
A student furiously cuts a sheet of black foam core with a small knife along a metal ruler. Meanwhile a classmate trims photographs on a large paper trimmer. A third student applies double-stick tape to the back of an image and burnishes it to the foam core with a bone folder. All three students are enrolled in Dr. Lynn Neal’s course, Religious Intolerance in the United States. The class, which met in Spring 2008, is working on a project entitled Portraits of Hate, Lessons of Hope: Examining Religious Intolerance in America. In addition to a library exhibit, the class developed a web site and lesson plans for teachers. Dr. Neal received grants from the Chambers Family Fund for Entrepreneurship and the Wake Forest University Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts to complete this project. The library displays will contain images of religious hatred along with some historical context and analysis designed to stimulate dialogue. Visit the ZSR Library this fall to experience this compelling exhibit.
