In February, I received a request asking for library staff to provide tours for 80 students. The students are participating in the Project Launch Program. For several years now, I have had the privilege of working with this group to coordinate tours. The students are seventh graders from Paisley IB Magnet School, and they are being mentored by Wake Forest students. In April, students arrive on campus and listen to various campus organizations discuss student life and academics. The day’s activities include presentations from Admissions, Campus Kitchen, Athletics, and the Volunteer Service Corp staff.

This year Ellen Daugman, Kaeley McMahan, and Giz Womack volunteered to assist with the tours. Giz and I greeted the first group of 40 students at 8:30 a.m. and proceeded to give them a tour. The other 40 students completed a campus tour and returned to the library around 9:00 a.m. to begin their library tour. During the 25minute tour, our leaders presented information about the ITC, Reference, Government Documents, and Special Collections.

For the Government Documents part of the tour, I pulled several print documents for a “show and tell” segment to emphasize that the U.S. government publishes information on a wide variety of topics. I notified the other tour leaders about the publications so that they could include them in their tour. One interesting document was an interesting picture book that narrates the story of Smokey Bear in both English and Spanish languages. Before I knew it, the 25 minutes had flown by, and it was time to return my group to the lobby so that they could go to their next activity. Thanks to Ellen, Kaeley, Megan and Giz for assisting with the tours.
