September Events

Crafternoons, September 8 and 22

September saw the kick-off of the recurring Crafternoon program, a collaboration between Public Services and RIO. Headed by Jemma Johnson and Danielle Key with support from the library Fellow Celina Seo, Crafternoons offers snacks and a craft students can make in the library. This fun study break aims to build connection and engagement with students while promoting ZSR’s Wellness Collection. Over 70 people stopped by to make origami on Sept. 8 and just under 100 made friendship bracelets on Sept. 22.

Public Services provided table, signage, and setup support for several campus events in September:

  • Fall Career Fair Table Tents, September 3-18: Partnered with Employer Relations to distribute table tents across the Atrium, Wilson 4, Mandelbaum Room, Scholars Commons, Room 401, and the 24/7 Reading Room. The tents advertised the Fall Career Fair held Sept 17, 12–4 p.m.
  • Healthy Minds Study Table Tents, September 5-15: The Counseling Center placed ~250 tents across the Atrium and study spaces to promote survey participation.
  • Wake Up Wednesday, September 10: Provided table setup support from 8:45–9:30 AM for this outreach program. Wake Up Wednesday invites students to “warm up with a free coffee (or tea) from Campus Life leadership” with the table located at the ZSR Library entrance.
  • Wake Forest Medicine’s Health Rewired (Room 403), September 17: Coordinated with the Dean’s Office and provided 3 long tables for catering purposes.
  • Writing Center Open House (Room 426 hallway), September 26: Supported open house setup with two tables for catering/info and also coordinated delivery and retrieval.

Shifting Projects

Our shifting project has now reached the N’s (Fine Arts) collection, which is moving from Reynolds 6th floor down to Reynolds 4th floor. As of September 30, the team has progressed to NA997 .L97 J35 2011. During the month of September, the relocation of the Unbound Periodicals from Reynolds 4 to Reynolds 1 was completed. These shifts bring greater consistency across floors and make space planning more effective for the long term.

Building Updates

  • Vannoy is finishing the work on the Reynolds roof. They are currently replacing the roof doors, which is expected to be completed by the 3rd week of October.
  • Vannoy is still working on the area above the ceiling in 611. They will need to replace the roof drain. This work will need to be completed over the Winter Break.
  • Vannoy is working on the external brick repair at the West entrance. This work was completed on October 3.
  • In September, we submitted 23 Facilities requests. There is only one pending request.
  • Printer Instruction Refresh: ZSR has updated the signage on all student printers. The worn taped instruction sheets have been replaced with durable clear labels featuring a short “quick start” guide and a QR code linking to a new LibGuide with detailed instructions and troubleshooting. This update, developed collaboratively by Barry Davis, Jemma Johnson, and Daisha Bunn, ensures clearer guidance and easier access to help when printing, copying, or scanning.
  • Fire Exit Signage Updates: As part of ongoing Safety & Security Committee work, new fire exit signage has been installed in the atrium and mezzanine areas. The updated signs now read: “EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY — Push to Open, Alarm Will Sound” to match existing building standards. Patrick Ferrell handled the installation, with coordination from Jemma Johnson and Rodrigo Castro. Existing Wilson Wing exit signs will remain in place due to their secure attachment.

Professional Development and News

Rodrigo Castro attended the Designing Libraries for the 21st Century. This conference focuses on the roles architects, designers, and library professionals have in creating library spaces that are attractive, useful, relevant, and that foster a sense of ownership and tradition. Rodrigo will submit a blog post outlining important aspects of this conference.

Members of the Public Services Department appeared in the Acknowledgement Section of David Lubin’s Ready for my Close Up: The Making of Sunset Boulevard and the Dark Side of the Hollywood Dream.

Acknowledgements from Dr. David Lubins's new book. "James Harper and Kylie Bradley in Wake Forest University’s inter-library loan department were fast and thorough in helping me track down hard-to-find books and newspaper and magazine articles. Peter Romano and Patrick Ferrell at the circulation desk kept me plentifully supplied with old movies that were germane to my research and others that were peripheral yet still provided valuable context."
