Elizabeth Blackwell drew these 500 botanical illustrations as a fundraising project to help get her wastrel husband out of debtors’ prison. These two large volumes of information and engravings based on Blackwell’s drawings document the plants in the famous Chelsea Physic Garden. Blackwell was particularly interested in documenting the many species recently imported from the Americas.
