Public Computers

Several locations within the library offer public computers, from basic web-connected computers to powerful Mac and Windows workstations. In most cases, these are available for all library users on a first come-first serve basis whenever the library is open, providing access to library research databases, search tools, and web resources. Mac and Windows PCs also offer Microsoft Office and other productivity tools.

  • The Mac Lab, located just off the Atrium, provides iMac computers. When not scheduled for a class, the Lab is available to all library users, and is open during Bridge service desk hours.
  • The Scholars Commons, on Reynolds 4, is a flexible study space that includes a mix of Windows and Mac computers.
  • Study space on Wilson 4 provides both Macs and Windows PCs. Additional PCs are available in the Atrium and the 24/7 study room.

Tips on Using Public Computers

In order to protect your personal files and online accounts, we suggest the following guidelines:

  • Save files to a personal flash drive or cloud file service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). Files saved on the desktop will be deleted the next time the computer is logged out or reboots.
  • We strongly recommend that you log out of any web sites you access with a personal account.
  • When you are done using a public Mac, we strongly recommend that you logout. When you are done using a public Windows PC, we suggest rebooting or restarting the computer. This will prevent anyone else from accessing your accounts and files.

All PCs and Macs in the Library are set up to print to the campus print queues, and files printed from any PC or Mac can be released at any of the Library’s eight printers.

Docking Stations

The Scholars Commons on Reynolds 4 includes two docking stations. Simply plug the USB-C cable into a USB-C port on your Macbook or Windows device and your laptop will have access to a large, high-resolution monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. The docking station will also charge your laptop as you use it (depending on the capabilities of your USB-C port).

The two docking stations offer one 32″ 4k monitor and one 34″ ultrawide monitor.

Note: Macbook users may see a prompt to specify a keyboard type. If you see this prompt, please select the ANSI keyboard type or just cancel out of the dialog box.

Windows machines may be configured to show the same desktop on both the laptop display and the external monitor. To change this, press the Windows logo key + P and select “Extend”.

Charging Your Devices

The Library has several options to help you keeps your laptop, phone, and other devices charged up.

  • There is a charging locker across from the Library Services Desk on Level 2. You may safely lock up your phone while it charges.
  • There are USB charging ports in much of the furniture in the Scholars Commons, Level 4.
  • There are several high speed chargers and battery packs available for checkout from the Library Services Desk. These work for charging both laptops and phones.

Occupancy Sensors

ZSR has installed small sensors around the building to measure how busy different study spaces are. This information is available online at waitz.io/wake-forest or via the Waitz app. In order to keep this service running without interruptions, we ask library users not to unplug sensors. If you need to charge your phone, laptop, or other device, please ask at the Service Desk about available chargers.

Please see our privacy page for information on how the occupancy sensors work and what data they gather.
