Sauda’s artist’s book, “Lebenslauf” is composed of four individual pieces. Some are ceramic and fragile, which is the main focus I held as I created the box to house these items. I laid out the items and made a rough drawing with the measurements of each item.
I ended up cutting out shapes of each item from archival board. These ‘made to size cutouts’ helped when I began making the box that included compartments for the items.
The cut outs helped me make accurate compartments for each of the irregular shaped items. When I make archival boxes for books, I use the book as a measurement, and make marks on the board using the book. This was the same process. I used the cutouts (not the actual item) for a measurement. The actual items don’t need to be handled too much….they are precious.
Cutting and gluing down the blue book cloth was tricky because there were lots of corners and angles. I had a nice marbled paper on heavy paper that matched nicely with the book cloth, and also was a subtle accent for the actual pieces Sauda Mitchell created. I glued the marbled paper onto the floor of each compartment of the box. One of the ceramic pieces had a foot on the bottom side and I made a small frame to keep the ceramic piece in place. I hope the completed box both protects and accents this wonderful piece of art.

Beautiful box for a very cool book.
Thanks for showing us.
Love this, Craig!
As the person who moved this box to its permanent storage location, I can confirm it protects and accents the uniquely beautiful pieces inside! Your custom enclosures are works of art themselves, Craig.
Congratulations Craig for this creative, interesting and unique result.
Beautiful housing for beautiful work!
