One current exhibit in the Special Collections Reading room is composed of calligraphy from the local Encore Group. This group is ably led by Joyce Teta, who is an excellent teacher and well-respected calligrapher from Winston-Salem. The group is composed of calligraphers and bookmakers with beginning to advanced students and teachers.
Joyce gave members of the group one or two copies of the New Testament she obtained from The Shepherd’s Center until all 26 letters of the alphabet were taken. The Encore Group members then interpreted these letters as they saw fit, using the books as their canvas. A “versal” is an ornamental letter that begins a part of a book or manuscript.
The result is a wonderful artists book exhibit, which Special Collections & Archives was fortunate to receive as a donation earlier this year. Please visit The SC&A Reading Room (625) to see this engaging body of work of creative calligraphic inspiration.
