I spent the day on the University of Washington campus at an all-day follow-up workshop to the Institute on Scholarly Communications that I attended in December in Durham (remember that marathon Gaz article?). I LOVED the campus and was very glad to see both the Odegaard Undergraduate Library (that I heard a lot about when I was in the UGL business at Wayne) and the Suzallo Library (with a reading room second only to the Library of Congress). The workshop was a mix of speaker-led, with an outstanding panel of faculty members speaking on scholarly communication topics, and participant-led, with discussion groups centered around the need to get both librarians and faculty aware of the issues. I spoke with Sha-Li Zhang from UNCG who was at the first Institute at UCLA and is making a bit of headway on the UNCG campus. She said they are trying to get the UNC system to host a common institutional repository for all 16 campuses, rather than having each campus host their own. That makes a lot of sense.
I should warn everyone that, as usual, I filled the margins of my notepaper with all kinds of ideas about all kinds of topics that I will talk to folks about when I get home. I get my best ideas when I am away!
I’m off to the Exhibit opening to give the Alibris rep some moral support. More tomorrow.
