Special Collections & Archives is hosting an exciting variety of artist’s books created by five women from our area. These books represent a variety of approaches to creating artist’s books as a form of expression. The artists are Sara Hiatt (Kernersville, NC), Anne Murray (Winston-Salem, NC), Robin Harper (Mebane, NC), Terry Schupach-Gordon (Shoals, NC) and Joyce Teta (Winston-Salem, NC). Their work reflects paper-folding, letterpress printing, paper making, marbling, pop-up books and calligraphy. On September 10th, Special Collections hosted a well-attended reception for these artists and each book artist gave a demonstration of some aspect of their work.
In The Ammons Gallery (Room 401) an exhibit of artist’s books and calligraphy is displayed in the ten cases of that room. This material has been created by The Encore Group, an informal group of artists led by Joyce Teta.
These very intriguing and creative works are work visiting and experiencing. The calligraphy project is based on a quote by Diane Ackerman. Each individual artist interpreted the same text in their own way. These calligraphy pieces will eventually be formed into a bound folio.
Finally, some of Craig Fansler’s artist’s books are also displayed in a lobby case at the ZSR Library entrance. These are a selection of artist’s books created for the exhibit, Caring for Our Collections: A Day in the Life of a Preservation Librarian in 2017.

Thank you, Craig! The book exhibit will be available in SCA, Room 625, through today, so if you haven’t yet visited, you still have a chance…
It used to just be that the words were what made a book beautiful. Now, my eyes are opened to new possibilities! These artists are magnificent!
