Literary & Journalistic Collections
Wake Forest University Special Collections & Archives is home to the following authors’ papers and literary and journalistic collections:
- Maya Angelou Film and Theater Collection: The Maya Angelou Film and Theater Collection documents the author and poet’s extensive work in the performing arts.
- Authors Collection: This collection consists of materials, correspondence, letters, and works of various authors from the late 18th century through the 20th century.
- W.J. Cash Papers: Wilbur Joseph Cash is best known as the author of The Mind of the South, an influential book about the American South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Jean Ring Cude: Jean Ring Cude was a North Carolina poet and writer who lived in Winston-Salem. This collection contains a draft manuscript of a book entitled Meritha Jane as well as some other writings and a list of books in Cude’s personal library.
- Jan G. Hensley Papers: Jan G. Hensley was a Wake Forest alumnus (1964) and a collector of North Carolina author’s works. He is regarded as an influential figure in NC literary culture for his photographs of famous authors and literary collection.
- John Charles McNeill Papers: John Charles McNeill (1874-1907) was a Wake Forest alumni and one of North Carolina’s most celebrated poets. His published works include Songs of Merry and Sad and Lyrics From the Cotton Land, the latter of which was published posthumously.
- William Somerset Maugham Letters: William Somerset Maugham (1874 – 1965) was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer.
- Gertrude Stein and Conference Press Collection: The Conference Press was the creation of three UCLA students, Hal Levy, Gilbert A. Harrison, and William Bayard Okie. The collection consists of the publishers’ archive for Gertrude Stein’s book, What Are Masterpieces? (Los Angeles: Conference Press, 1940), as well as several Stein manuscript fragments and notes, offprints, reviews, and other Stein ephemera, mostly related to her 1934-1935 American tour.
- Douglas C. Waller Papers: Douglas Waller was a journalist and reporter, covering military and foreign affairs, as well as an author of books on those topics. This collection documents Waller’s research for his books.
- Ronald Watkins Papers: Ronald Watkins (1904-2001) was a Shakespeare scholar and stage director. He taught for many years at Harrow School, where he produced Shakespeare plays with student actors on a stage modeled after Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
- Diane Wakoski Correspondence: This correspondence series consists primarily of letters, postcards, and poems sent from American poet, Diane Wakoski (1937- ) to Tony Weinberger from 1967 to 1973.
- Lou Rogers Wehlitz Papers: Lou Rogers Wehlitz was an author of poems, historical and religious articles, and fiction. She was also a teacher in her home state of North Carolina, before becoming an editor.
- Emily Wilson Collection on A. R. Ammons: Emily Wilson is an author and poet that predominantly worked in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She retained a strong friendship with poet A.R. Ammons that lasted for 30 years until Ammons’ death in 2001.
