Jack D. Fleer was a professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University from 1964 to 2002. He also became the director of the summer Boys' State program, held on the Wake Forest campus during the 1970s and 1980s. Fleer also wrote three books about North Carolina politics and governors. The collection includes material relating to Wake Forest University, including faculty committees, Thomas Hearn presidential search committee, American Association of University Professors' committee on faculty salaries and James Ralph Scales' retirement. He was a teacher in Farmington and Taylorsville, 1852-1859, and professor at Wake Forest College, 1859-1861. During the Civil War he was Capt. of County I, 1st North Carolina Infantry Regt. and was in charge of the "Roll of Honor" office, Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a teacher in Warrenton, Raleigh, and Wilkes counties. He served as Assistant U.S. Marshal, and as member of the General Assembly of North Carolina.

Jan G. Hensley was a Wake Forest alumnus (1964) and a collector of North Carolina author's works. He is regarded as an influential figure in NC literary culture for his photographs of famous authors and literary collection. The Jan G. Hensley Collection includes photographs, negatives, notes, audiotapes, graphic materials, and ephemera relating to authors from North Carolina and surrounding regions. Most of the materials were collected or created by Hensley and relate to readings or other public appearances by the authors.

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America, 1861-1865. Davis died in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 6, 1889. Davis wrote his letter Dec. 24, 1886, from Beauvoir, Mississippi, to Thomas B. Wilder in appreciation for a copy of the resolutions passed by the North Carolina CSA veterans at their Louisburg, North Carolina, reunion.

J.L. Shuck was the first Baptist missionary to China appointed by the Triennial Convention, 1835. In 1846 the Southern Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board appointed him to Canton, China. He was later transferred to Shanghai. His letter, Jan. 22, 1848, to Mrs. William Alexander Graham, thanks her for her hospitality and mentions the Cantonese, the climate, the Shanghai Baptist Church, the fear of foreigners being killed, the provincial governors, and the emperor of China.
