David Wells Herring was born in Duplin County, North Carolina on July 13, 1858. He enrolled at Wake Forest College in January 1879 and graduated (A.B.) in June 1882 and entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1885. He married Maggie Nutt Herring in 1885 and they soon began their missionary work in China with Matthew T. Yates. D. W. Herring retired in 1927 after serving as a missionary in China for 41 years.
This collection contains newspaper clippings regarding missionary work, biographical materials about David W. Herring and his wife Maggie Nutt Herring, and correspondence. The collection also contains photocopies of a story he wrote after the death of his son as well as an article about missionary work.

Daisie Ghelson Mitchell passed away in 1920 and was survived by four daughters. This collection contains memorabilia of her life and that of her daughter, Daisie Allen Mitchell, in North Carolina and Virginia.
